Going to Austria? Explore Salzburg!
Booked a holiday to Austria?
Have you booked a holiday to Austria? Be sure to visit the city of Salzburg, lying in the north of Austria and capital of Land Salzburg. Salzburg is easily accessible by car, however you should look for a parking garage. From most garages you walk quickly to the centre of the city.
Why to Salzburg?
Salzburg is a city suitable for everyone, women can enjoy shopping in the many small boutiques or shops of famous brands. Men can enjoy a terrace and a beer. At the old market square, also called the Alter Markt, I had a delicious dinner at Tomaselli, a traditional café dating back to 1703.
The town consists of two parts separated by the River Salzach. Salzburg has many churches and castles, all of which are worth seeing and causes a day each for you to visit.
A good example is the Salzburg Cathedral, a beautiful church in baroque style. The city is very well kept and clean. On the main square there are many cultural activities such as music festivals. Among the most striking sights I have made a small summary below.
Festung Hohensalzburg
Festung Hohensalzburg castle is 120 meters high on a hill and from the city itself it can be seen. The construction of the castle began in the year 1077. Despite his age the castle today, looks still very good.
The castle served as refuge to the archbishop and has a length of 250 meters and a width of 150 meters. Today the castle can be reached with a lift or on foot via a variety of small footpaths.
Mozart's birthplace
Nice to visit the place where Mozart was born in 1756 and see exactly where he grew up, because he lived there until 1773. Especially if you are a fan of his music, it is interesting to pay a visit, as his birthplace is nowadays a museum, which mainly shows 18th and 19th musical instruments to see.
Salzburg Zoo Hellbrunn
Salzburg has a large zoo of approximately 13 acres which includes approximately 400 different species. It includes an aviary, a predator park, and the continents of Africa, America and Eurasia are reconstructed, which includes of course the corresponding species.
The surroundings of Salzburg
In about 40 km of Salzburg in Werfen, you can visit the Ice Cave and Hohenwerfen burg.
The Eisriesenwelt is an ice cave at high altitude and very impressive to visit.
Hohenwerfen Castle is a castle of more than 1000 years old in a very good condition, with many different activities and exhibitions in it, like a bird show.
Finally
So if you are in the neighbourhood of Salzburg, pay the city a visit, you won’t regret it. There is so much more to do than I've seen and described, and I'm sure I will go back to pay the city another visit and enjoy shopping and eating a pizza.
